Professional Experience
Prior to becoming an attorney, John Skabelund was an auditor and serial entrepreneur. Mr. Skabelund’s previous companies were in the real estate development, human resource consulting, and internet industries. His firsthand real world business experience, combined with his education, helps Mr. Skabelund understand his clients’ challenges. This unique perspective allows him to develop innovative solutions and practical solutions.  More importantly, Mr. Skabelund’s practice is client centered.  His goal is to develop a long-lasting relationship with each client.

Representative Clients

  • Couple with an estate valued at approximately $80 million with significant real estate and business holdings.  Created an estate plan that preserved their wealth and significantly reduced their estate tax exposure saving their estate more than $25 million.
  • Real estate investor with approximately 60 rental properties (both residential and commercial).  Created an estate plan that protected assets for the client and his heirs.
  • Entrepreneur created multi-million dollar company and owned significant securities and real estate holdings exceeding $50 million.  Created a wealth preservation and estate tax reduction plan that provides for further future estate tax reduction.
  • Represented several buyers and sellers of multi-million dollar companies while working with their tax counsel to reduce taxes from the sale of the business and protect the sellers’ profits from the sale.
  • Super Bowl champion, other athletes and other high profile individuals to establish an estate plan protecting assets and privacy while reducing estate taxes.
  • Counsel for both large and small trusts and estates in administration of assets after the death of the property owner.
  • Notwithstanding representing multi-million dollar clients, routinely represent clients with less than a million in assets.
  • Litigation involving estates and trusts, ranging in all sizes, as counsel to the trustee or executor as well as to the beneficiaries.

Philosophy

Mr. Skabelund also knows firsthand the value and importance of proper estate planning and asset protection.  As an estate planner, he provides security and peace of mind to his clients by providing custom-tailored solutions to clients. In addition, he is often able to protect his clients’ assets from creditors as part of their estate or business plan, while reducing their estate taxes. As a litigator, he has become aware of the many pitfalls prevalent in estate planning and wealth preservation.

Mr. Skabelund has presented on topics of asset protection and estate planning to nationwide audiences of certified public accountants, financial advisors and attorneys.  He has also presented to financial institutions too.

Personal
John and his wife, Sarah, are the proud parents of four children. He enjoys international travel, Finnish genealogy, and sports.
