Ms. Barker's "philosophy":
I bring the understanding of people to my practice as a lawyer with a focus on family and divorce law. I know that most people want to keep costs down, keep the hatred down, and just get it over with, without hurting each other more than necessary, and while keeping the children from suffering through it all. I know. I have been through it. I have been divorced and I am now a stepmother. And I survived.
In the early 1980s, I started my adult working life as a psychotherapist with a Masters degree in Clinical Psychology. I felt that the law needed more practitioners who understood the human emotions behind the cases. After law school, I spent 12 years as a criminal prosecutor, helping victims of crime see justice in court. The wide variety of people who become victims is just amazing. “It happens in the best of families” is not just a cliché, it is true. And some people become victimized by the laws, by an excessive application of the laws, or by being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
There is not a person on this earth who does not have some painful experience to overcome. The difference between people can be measured more by how they handle their painful experiences than the fact that they have them. The wisest people know to seek help when they need it, and they know that the proper help can carry them through to a bright future.
The decision to consult a lawyer is a very important one, made at an incredibly stressful time in your life, but don’t let that stress make you put it off. The chance of you getting through this without losing your shirt and your kids is dependent upon you not ignoring it.
